Igor Stravinsky's sardana award

On the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the publishing house Ficta Edicions i Produccions, SL and the 50th anniversary of Igor Stravinsky’s death (1882-1971), the editorial from Girona announces an unique edition of the composition competition Igor Stravinsky’s Sardana. A competition endowed with 2.500 € in cash that will include the premier and publication of the work.

In 1924, Igor Stravinsky, during his first visit to Barcelona (where he conducted, among others, The Firebird in front of the Orquestra Pau Casals), attended a sardanes audition and was fascinated by the sound of the cobla and excited by Juli Garreta’s sardanes. It is said that he exclaimed “more Garreta, more Garreta!” and that afterwards he stated, “when I’m in Paris, send me some sardanes, I want to study them, also send me some Catalan folk songs; then, I will send you a sardana back”.

Such sardana, if the great Russian composer ever wrote it, has never arrived or been found.

Solving the enigma of Igor Stravinsky’s Sardana is the reason for the call of the competition, in order for a Catalan composer to write it (from the data we have).
